Institute Umbilica

Špela Slovša

Institute Director, Project Manager

Špela discovered her passion for maternity care after her second birth, which was a planned homebirth. The stark difference between her hospital and home birth encouraged her to step on the path of human and patient’s rights advocacy. She is a doula, childbirth educator and lactation specialist with 10 years of experience helping families. She has been in leading positions since 2016 and has strong motivation to change maternity care towards more respectful models of care through advocacy, education and research. In 2022, she founded Institute Umbilica which quickly became an important player in Slovenia’s maternity care. Špela appears in media frequently and is outspoken about what maternity care could be like if all stakeholders worked together. Her areas of interest are evolution of midwifery, mental health, pregnancy loss, breastfeeding and continuous models of care.

Andreja Pišek

Psychologist, Project Associate

Andreja is a mother of three children – each with their own story, each born through a different birth experience that has shaped her as a woman, a mother, and as someone who wants to support others on this path.
She is passionate about deepening her knowledge, especially in the field of psychological support for mothers, and about creating a safe space for conversation, compassion, and understanding. She believes that every mother needs and deserves support – not only during birth but especially afterward, when the true transformation begins.
She now works from her own experiences – from the needs she once felt and can now recognize in others. Her vision for the future is to work one-on-one with new mothers, to offer them the support they need, to listen, to truly hear them, and to remind them that they are not alone.
